Goldman Sachs economists expect Turkey may allow a faster depreciation of the Turkish lira to prioritize external balance stability over keeping inflation suppression as the top priority. Clemens Grafe and Basak Edizgil say the lira could depreciate at an annualized rate of more than 20% against the dollar, even if that slows disinflation. They add that faster currency weakness implies policy rates will need to remain higher than current market pricing to preserve financial stability amid ongoing de-dollarization. Turkey’s disinflation strategy partly relies on a real appreciation of the lira — i.e. nominal depreciation slower than inflation — to relieve price pressures. The lira has fallen about 9% versus the dollar year-to-date.
