Iran has rejected Oman's proposal for a jointly managed regional mechanism for
Strait of Hormuz shipping, insisting one inbound lane must lie entirely in
Iranian territorial waters and a second lane must partially do so. An Iranian
senior official said Tehran insists on control of the full inbound lane and
parts of the outbound lane, that only Iran and Oman may determine management
based on their respective shares, and that it will bar other countries from
influencing the arrangement. The official also accused the US and Saudi Arabia
of pressuring Oman to advance what he called an unrealistic plan.
