On July 30, China's foreign ministry said chemical weapons Japan abandoned in
China during its invasion are a serious wartime crime and continue to threaten
Chinese lives and the environment. Beijing noted Japan was required by the
Chemical Weapons Convention and a China-Japan government memorandum to complete
destruction by 2007, but that Tokyo has shown insufficient compliance and
investment and its destruction plan has been delayed four times. China strongly
urged Japan to fully and faithfully meet its obligations, promptly provide
effective information on burial sites and speed up disposal to remove the
threat.
