Persistent heat and drought have pushed Rhine water to new lows. Cologne gauge
fell to 67–68 cm on Aug. 1 local time, below the 2018 record; Duisburg‑Ruhrort
dropped to 153 cm, another historical low. Sustained low water is constraining
inland navigation: freight vessels cannot sail fully loaded and require split
shipments, raising transport costs, reducing logistics efficiency and adding
pressure to the German economy.
