Axios reports Saudi Crown Prince and prime minister Mohammed bin Salman called US President Trump on Aug. 1, expressing concern about reported US plans for a new large-scale strike on Iran and asking for clarification of any action plans, according to US officials. A separate source told Axios MBS urged Trump to de-escalate and not to carry out strikes on Iran. The White House and the Saudi embassy in Washington declined to comment.

Hamas leader Ghazi Hamad said today’s Israeli bombardment of Gaza proves Israel never genuinely sought a deal. He said Hamas has told mediators Israel is not interested in reaching an agreement and has asked them to intervene. Hamas also said it has not received Israel’s position on a second phase of a Gaza agreement and that Israel must fulfil its commitments before that phase can begin.
