On Aug. 3 at the 46th COSPAR science assembly in Florence, Wang Jinsong of the
China Meteorological Administration received the William Nordberg Medal, the
first Chinese recipient since the award’s 1988 inception; he was also honored
with an asteroid name. Wang is director of the National Satellite Meteorological
Center (National Space Weather Monitoring and Warning Center) and chief designer
of the Fengyun meteorological satellite program; the award reflects
international recognition of China’s advances in space science and space‑weather
operations, which Wang and his team helped develop from minimal capability to an
internationally leading position.
