The Institute of High Energy Physics at the Chinese Academy of Sciences said a
China-led team in the Beijing Spectrometer III (BESIII) international
collaboration has, after 15 years of experiments, provided the first
experimental confirmation of a new form of matter: the glueball. The Standard
Model predicts glueballs as bound states of gluons arising from attractive gluon
self-interaction; such particles had not previously been observed
experimentally.
