Japan's finance minister Satsuki Katayama told NHK that Tokyo and Washington have been in close contact and would not hesitate to intervene in the FX market again if necessary. She said both sides view recent yen weakness as largely driven by years of yen-arbitrage and speculative flows rather than demand-driven transactions. Katayama added both governments are prepared to act without hesitation and that Japan will explain how its macro and micro policies support a stronger yen.
