Axios reports Senator Bernie Sanders has sent letters to OpenAI CEO Sam Altman,
ANTHROPIC CEO Dario Amodei and Mark Zuckerberg urging a pause in AI development
and warning that lawmakers will intervene if they do not. Sanders wrote: “At a
time when we have already seen humans lose control and produce potentially
dangerous viruses, your companies are still racing—pouring tens of billions of
dollars into a technology no one can fully understand, predict or control.”
Axios adds that major AI legislation, particularly progressive-led efforts, is
unlikely to pass this Congress; expect symbolic bills and public pressure now,
but if Democrats retake either chamber Congress could pursue investigations and
subpoenas of tech CEOs.
