SpaceX has completed a $60 billion acquisition of AI coding startup Cursor,
effective Aug. 14, filings show, roughly two months after the companies
announced a deal. The purchase, one of the largest tech transactions on record,
is intended to accelerate development of advanced AI tools to automate tasks
including software coding. The move is described as a key step in Musk’s effort
to catch up with rivals Anthropic and OpenAI. SpaceX’s AI arm has been renamed
SpaceXAI; it had limited commercial applications and recently underwent layoffs
and restructuring. Cursor launched its AI coding assistant in 2023 to help
developers write and debug code and was among the fastest-growing startups
during the surge in demand for chat-driven programming tools.
