On Aug. 14 local time, Luigi Mangione pleaded guilty in federal court to killing
UnitedHealth insurance CEO Brian Thompson. A federal judge set sentencing for
Dec. 18. Mangione admitted the shooting as part of the plea, which will avoid a
federal trial and could enable him to seek dismissal of New York state murder
charges and delay a state trial scheduled for Sept. 8. He faces both federal and
state charges; a New York second-degree murder conviction carries 25 years to
life.
