GfK's UK consumer confidence index rose to -14 in August, its highest since Aug
2024, aided by continued good weather and a new prime minister's "Burnham
effect." The index had climbed 6 pts in July under the same influences. GfK head
of consumer insights Neil Bellamy warned the uptick may be short-lived as
resurgent inf and persistent Middle East and other geopolitical risks will test
household resilience.
