Gasunie, the Dutch gas grid operator, said the Netherlands will not meet its 115 billion kWh storage target before winter because summer refilling is not commercially viable, leaving the country underprepared for exceptionally cold weather or sudden supply outages. Data from Gas Infrastructure Europe show Dutch storage at about 45% of capacity — the lowest for the season since records began in 2009 and well below the five‑year average of 73%. Gasunie said missing the target does not necessarily mean winter shortages or immediate security risk, but without additional measures the Netherlands would be unable to cope with an unusually severe winter. German gas storage is also at seasonal lows; grid operators and policymakers have warned of winter risk amid thin buffer stocks after recent price spikes and supply disruptions.
