According to the Financial Times, Sweden, the Netherlands, Spain and Poland are
urging the European Commission to reopen work on using frozen Russian sovereign
assets held in the EU—estimated at more than €200bn—to finance Ukraine amid
concern Kyiv may face a renewed funding crisis. An earlier EU plan collapsed
last winter after Belgium, which holds the bulk of those assets, blocked the
proposal. The group will send a letter to the Commission expected on Thursday
seeking renewed study and an update on alternative legal and technical
frameworks that could bypass Belgium’s veto.
