Iranian parliament speaker Ghalibaf posted on social media mocking U.S. Treasury
Secretary Bessent and linked to a New York Times report saying Bessent’s
bond-market credibility is under test. Ghalibaf repurposed Bessent’s earlier
criticism of Tehran, accusing the U.S. of spending on Israel and roughly 750
overseas bases instead of its own people, and wrote: “Scott, your credibility is
shaky. Do something useful.” The NYT report says Bessent has attempted to lower
U.S. yields by expanding long-term Treasury repurchase operations but market
reaction has been muted; with U.S. debt near $40 tln and Iran-related
inflationary pressure rising, the piece says his ability to tame the bond market
and his personal credibility face increasing scrutiny.
