U.S. officials said the U.S. military used an Army Multi-Mission High Energy
Laser in southern Texas' Rio Grande Valley on the night of Aug. 25-26 to shoot
down three drones operated by a Mexican drug cartel near the U.S.-Mexico border.
North American Aerospace Defense Command and U.S. Northern Command said the
drones posed an "actual threat" to U.S. forces and U.S. Customs and Border
Protection; the military did not disclose precise strike locations or whether
the engagements occurred on U.S. or Mexican territory. Mexican president
Sheinbaum said any unilateral U.S. action on Mexican soil would be a serious
violation of Mexico's sovereignty.
