Japan spent a record ¥15.4 trillion ($96.4bn) on FX intervention between July 30 and Aug. 26 to support the yen after it hit a 40-year low, the finance ministry said. The July 31 operation was coordinated with the United States, Japanese finance minister Katayama and US Treasury Secretary Bessent confirmed; both said they stand ready to intervene again if necessary. US funds are not included in the Japanese total and are expected to be smaller but carry symbolic significance, reinforcing authorities’ warning to speculators against betting on further yen weakness.
