Gunfire and explosions were reported across multiple Niamey districts from the
early hours of Aug. 29 local time. Sources said armed men attacked Diori Hamani
International Airport and tried to breach security perimeters around the
presidential palace. Residents reported heavy fighting and blasts near the 101
Air Base, which adjoins the airport. The airport was targeted in January and
June this year. Sahel National Alliance MP and National Transitional Council
member Bana Wagana Ibrahim said on social media the attackers were aiming at the
101 air base but that Nigerien security forces had regained control. Niger’s
government and military have not confirmed the reports.
