The 30-year US Treasury has registered more closes above 5% this year than in any year since 2006, marking the longest stretch of elevated ultra-long yields since 2006. Against a backdrop of large fiscal deficits, a fresh wave of corporate issuance and an upcoming potentially decisive Fed meeting, investors are expected to remain cautious in the coming weeks. The yield peaked in mid-August at 5.34%, the highest since 2007 and roughly 10 bps below the 22-year high. As of Monday the 30-year had closed above 5% on 55 days year-to-date; on Tuesday it was 5.27%.
