Apple sued OpenAI in federal court in July 2026, accusing the company of
stealing trade secrets and using Apple intellectual property to build its own
consumer hardware. Apple alleges OpenAI executives and former Apple employees
orchestrated a large-scale effort to obtain confidential information about
unreleased Apple products and that OpenAI disclosed Apple secrets when engaging
Apple partners. On Aug. 3 Apple sought a preliminary injunction to bar OpenAI
from using the disputed information during litigation; OpenAI responded the same
week with a blog post saying Apple is wrong and on Aug. 5 asked a federal judge
to dismiss the case as meritless. In filings on Aug. 19 Apple pushed the case
into discovery; on Aug. 31 OpenAI countered in court papers, saying Apple failed
to safeguard its own information and is likely to lose. A hearing on the matter
is scheduled for Oct. 1, 2026. Context: Apple and OpenAI began partnering in
June 2024 when Apple integrated ChatGPT into iPhone, iPad and Mac, with OpenAI
CEO Sam Altman attending Apple’s event. Signs of strain emerged in May 2025
after OpenAI acquired Jony Ive’s startup io for $6.4 billion and signaled an AI
hardware push. In Jan. 2026 Apple shifted strategy toward software-led AI
integration, partnering with Google to run Apple Intelligence features on
Google’s Gemini model and cloud infrastructure.
