Tesla (TSLA.O) has begun offering rides in a two-seat Cybercab without a
steering wheel or pedals in a "limited area" around Austin, Texas. The U.S. auto
safety regulator NHTSA said it is in communication with Tesla and is assessing
the situation, and declined to provide further details. NHTSA is responsible for
setting and enforcing vehicle safety rules, including oversight of new models.
CEO Elon Musk has said the Cybercab is central to Tesla’s bid to lead in
driverless vehicles.
