On the evening of Sept. 5, President Putin met with visiting US presidential
envoys Witkoff and Kushner in talks that lasted about three hours. Putin said he
had received requests via intelligence and diplomatic channels to stop
airstrikes on Kyiv and has ordered strikes on Kyiv to cease; Kremlin spokesman
Peskov earlier confirmed a three-day halt to strikes on Kyiv. Putin said Ukraine
has sharply reduced strikes on Russian territory, including Moscow, and that
Kyiv proposed a broader three-day ceasefire which Russia did not accept. Russia
said it will take all measures to ensure the safety of US–Ukraine negotiations
and mediators. Ukrainian President Zelenskiy said Ukraine will halt strikes on
Moscow effective immediately through Sept. 7.
