He said closures are to protect flight safety from volcanic ash and that airports will not be forced to reopen while ash continues to spread. He instructed airlines to notify passengers promptly and accurately of cancellations, changes or diversions, to honor refunds, and said some services may be redirected to alternate airports if necessary.
