On Sept. 7, China’s foreign ministry said the OPCW director‑general, the OPCW executive council chair and envoys from 12 countries visited Jilin’s Hunchun and Dunhua (Harbalin) from Aug. 31–Sept. 5 to inspect excavation, recovery and destruction operations for Japanese‑era chemical weapons abandoned in China. Participants noted the serious risk to lives and the environment and backed the OPCW’s use of the Chemical Weapons Convention to press Japan to promptly, fully and cleanly destroy the abandoned munitions.
