CPCA said August 2026 China passenger-car market showed five market-driving features: overall volumes recovered m/m but remained weak y/y with extreme structural divergence as fuel vehicles cool sharply and NEVs lead; sustained high oil prices are accelerating fuel-to-electric substitution. Fuel-vehicle retail fell more than 40% y/y in August, nearly halving; non-plug-in hybrids were relatively resilient. NEV retail was 1.005 mln units in August (y/y -10.1%, m/m +5.7%), lifting NEV penetration to a record 65.2%. Exports continued to underpin wholesale and capacity: manufacturers’ wholesale was 2.353 mln units in August (y/y -5.3%, m/m +4.5%), with wholesale y/y performance 18.3 percentage points stronger than retail. Industry inventories kept falling; high oil prices are squeezing fuel-vehicle dealers, eroding dealer confidence and keeping channel pressures elevated amid weak domestic wholesale and retail.
