China’s first domestically built 88,000-cbm very large gas carrier (VLGC), Changpingyuan, was completed and named on Sept. 8. The ~230m vessel used domestically developed advanced cryogenic welding, with core construction technologies now self‑sourced. It is fitted with an LPG dual‑fuel main engine and shaft‑driven generator, cutting CO2 by about 20% and SOx/PM emissions by about 90% versus fuel‑oil mode, with environmental performance described as internationally leading. The ship is the largest VLGC able to transit both the new and old Panama Canal locks and can carry nine types of liquefied gases, including LPG and liquid ammonia, positioning it for growth in global ammonia shipping demand.
