US stocks closed lower on Thursday Sept. 10: Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 316.20 points, or 0.60%, to 52,064.46; S&P 500 dropped 44.56 points, or 0.58%, to 7,591.80; Nasdaq Composite declined 171.62 points, or 0.65%, to 26,081.72.

A rebound in gasoline prices after two months of declines could push US August CPI MoM higher, reinforcing markets' expectations of a Fed rate hike next week. The Labor Department will publish August CPI on Friday; several key components of Thursday's PPI report were strong. Some economists say oil returning above $100/bbl will keep inflation elevated and broaden price pressures, while others point to import tariffs—notably recent tariffs on Canada—as a continuing source of upward price pressure.
