Observer Research Foundation director Hash Pant said India faces a test of
whether it can reconcile ties with the U.S. while managing expectations from
Iran and regional neighbors including the UAE. He noted BRICS foreign ministers
failed earlier this year to agree a consensus document because of UAE–Iran
divisions, and said rifts among Iran, the UAE and Saudi Arabia have shaped this
year’s BRICS agenda. Pant said India will try to push Tehran and Abu Dhabi to
find agreement on key items to enable consensus, but both have very strict
demands, making that outcome difficult.
