Foreign Minister Wang Yi said President Xi’s trip to India for the 18th BRICS
leaders’ meeting achieved three strategic objectives: deepen BRICS cooperation;
bolster the Global South’s influence by pressing for greater representation and
reform of international governance; and guide a recovery in China‑India ties.
Wang said BRICS has become the primary cooperation platform for the Global South
and that current international governance structures inadequately represent
those countries, constraining development and collective responses to global
challenges. He noted Xi and Prime Minister Modi held a bilateral meeting and
that under their strategic leadership China‑India relations are moving out of a
low, with an expanding cooperation agenda, record‑high bilateral trade and
increased people‑to‑people exchanges.
