Sept. 14 — China’s Foreign Ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun said at a regular
briefing that reports some Panamanian legislators formed a Panama–Taiwan
Legislative Exchange Group, with US members attending online, violate the
one-China principle. Guo said China firmly opposes any official contact between
its diplomatic partners and Taiwan authorities, called the group’s creation a
serious breach of Panama’s stated one-China stance, and urged Panama to
implement the principle to preserve the political basis of China–Panama ties. He
noted Panama’s president Mulino had said foreign policy is set by the government
and not individual MPs. China warned politicians who cross the line on Taiwan
will face serious consequences and urged the US to adhere to the one-China
principle and the three China–US joint communiqués and to stop sending signals
that encourage Taiwan independence or interfere in China–Panama relations.
