Japan will finalise an outline for a consumption tax cut and household subsidies on Tuesday but did not specify funding sources, a detail that risks sustaining market concern about the country’s strained fiscal position. The cabinet is expected to approve the outline Tuesday evening. Global fiscal and inflation worries pushed the benchmark 10-year JGB yield above 3% on Tuesday. The measures add to Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi’s ambitious spending agenda, which has already prompted bond selling and drawn criticism from US Treasury Secretary Bessent. Takaichi has pledged to limit new bond issuance in FY2027 to about JPY 40 tln (roughly $259bn), a commitment under scrutiny as planned spending looks set to rise from pandemic-era budget levels.

CNOOC said construction has begun in Shandong on the Qatar Bohani oilfield redevelopment project, located about 100 km east of Qatar’s coast in waters up to roughly 40m deep.
