Pakistan’s foreign ministry said on the evening of the 16th it summoned the
acting chargé d’affaires at the Indian High Commission to lodge a strong protest
over what it called “highly provocative and unacceptable” actions by an Indian
naval vessel on the 15th inside Pakistan’s exclusive economic zone (EEZ). The
ministry said the Indian ship made close-range provocative manoeuvres during the
Pakistan Navy’s biennial exercises, causing contact between the two vessels, a
serious breach of signed agreements and likely to heighten regional tensions.
Pakistan urged India to comply with international law and bilateral accords
aimed at preventing maritime incidents; Pakistan’s acting high commissioner in
New Delhi will register a similar protest with India’s foreign ministry.
