US retail sales rose 1.2% in August, beating expectations, after a July revision showing a 0.5% decline. Twelve of 13 retail categories expanded, including gas stations and online retailers. The report said consumers — the main driver of growth — continue to spend despite a rebound in energy prices and persistent inflation; back-to-school shopping may have boosted department stores, apparel, sporting goods and electronics.
