The Information reports OpenAI is reportedly close to solving another Millennium
Prize math problem; an informed source said staff expect the next target, the
Hodge conjecture, to be resolved in the near term. The source said OpenAI may
delay public disclosure while coordinating with the mathematics community to
avoid a repeat of this month’s dispute in which mathematicians accused the
company of trying to pre-empt credit. Researchers cited in the report view
advanced mathematics as the next domain after software engineering for model
development, expect an automation wave in math within six to nine months, and
say solving deep math problems—though costly—would help accelerate automation of
machine-learning research.
