S&P 500 opened 83.21 points higher, or 1.10%, at 7,635.46 on Thursday, Sept. 17. Nasdaq Composite opened 370.73 points higher, or 1.43%, at 26,349.16. Dow Jones Industrial Average opened 342.07 points higher, or 0.66%, at 51,803.97.

Ten ministries, led by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology and the National Development and Reform Commission, today issued the Pharmaceutical Industry “15th Five-Year Plan”, directing stronger original innovation. The plan prioritizes major infectious diseases, major chronic diseases, rare diseases and pediatric medicines, strengthens firms’ role as innovation drivers, and calls for accelerating R&D toward first-in-class, breakthrough and disruptive therapies. It supports pharmaceutical companies in targeting frontier biomedical science to develop new targets, new mechanisms and new drug types — first-in-class (FIC) and best-in-class (BIC) — and urges faster R&D and application of frontier, leading high-end medical devices.
