US President Trump said plans for a new US Army base in Poland have made "significant progress" and that the site will be announced if the plan proceeds. He called it a "historic step" for the US-Poland alliance but gave no construction details. Poland has long sought an expanded US military presence and has offered to partly fund construction; a prior proposal during Trump’s first term floated naming the base "Fort Trump." About 10,000 US troops are currently stationed in Poland. The announcement comes as the US re-evaluates Europe deployments and presses NATO allies for greater defense burden-sharing. Poland, bordering Russia and the Ukraine conflict zone, has been increasing defense spending and seeking closer security cooperation with the US.
