Gulf states will urge U.S. President Trump to avoid further escalation with Iran
at a Tuesday meeting during the UN General Assembly, people familiar with the
matter said. GCC officials, including representatives from Saudi Arabia, the UAE
and Qatar, are coordinating the session and want an end to a conflict they say
has seen their territory and vessels struck by thousands of Iranian missiles and
drones and has disrupted Strait of Hormuz shipping, contributing to economic
contraction or marked slowdown. Gulf governments remain divided on how to
respond to Iran and its claims over control of the key energy transit route, but
hope the meeting will produce progress.
