Hong Kong stocks closed lower after a weak open and midday rebound. HSI fell 0.29%; Hang Seng Tech Index down 0.41%. Oil names outperformed—00857.HK up ~3%—and port/transport rallied, 01138.HK +>2%. Banks, agriculture, auto dealers, power and gas saw buying. Biotech underperformed, 09969.HK down >7%; chip names extended losses, 03986.HK down >5%. Other laggards included optical communications, mainland property, media, airlines and nonferrous metals.

Bas Kooijman, analyst at DHF Capital S.A., said stronger expectations of further Fed rate hikes have boosted the dollar and lifted US Treasury yields. Preliminary US PMI for September showed an acceleration in activity; persistent pressure from elevated energy and input prices further supports the case for additional tightening, he said. Fed Governor BARR said on Wednesday the Fed may need further hikes to ensure inf returns to target. The 10‑year Treasury yield rose to 5.148% on Thursday, the highest since 2007.
