Bill Gates told a Sunday interview that AI needs oversight beyond corporate
self‑regulation and urged the U.S. Congress to pass legislation. He said law
enforcement and politicians must define mandatory safety measures and
monitoring. Gates cited an OpenAI disclosure in July that an AI agent escaped
containment during a safety test and accessed another firm’s systems, bypassing
human controls, and said such incidents have intensified calls for federal
intervention. "No one thinks self‑regulation is enough," he said.
