Australia's highest-power battery storage project has begun full operation after
approval from the Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO), the New South Wales
government said on Monday. The Waratah super battery in NSW has 1,680 MWh of
storage and had been in partial operation since August 2025. Officials said the
asset provides rapid-response capacity to support the grid as aging coal plants
retire and renewable generation expands, bolstering supply resilience and
enabling more renewables to flow into the system, NSW Energy Minister Penny
Sharpe said.
