US consumer confidence plunged in September, down 6.7 points to 81.9 — the
weakest reading since 2014 and below the 89.2 forecast, the Conference Board
said on Tuesday. Households are more pessimistic about business conditions and
the labor market over the next six months; assessment of current business
conditions turned negative for the first time since September 2024, while views
of the current labor market worsened but remained in positive territory,
Conference Board chief economist Dana Peterson said.
