Capital Economics senior Asia-Pacific economist Abhijit Surya says signs that Australian underlying inflation is no longer accelerating make further Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) tightening unlikely. August trimmed-mean and weighted-median CPI both held at 3.6%, and core measures did not strengthen, supporting the view that the tightening cycle may be over. Surya adds the RBA is likely to remain on the sidelines in the near term while awaiting confirmation of slowing inflation over the coming months.
