Spain Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez will make a formal statement on Monday at
09:00 local time (15:00 Beijing), the prime minister's office said. Markets and
commentators widely expect he will announce a snap election, moving up a vote
that Sanchez has previously said would be held in 2027. The move follows mass
protests and the lower house's rejection on Friday of the government's
housing-relief plan. Political analyst Eduardo Bayon said calling an election
now is logical despite the risk Sanchez could lose power. A government spokesman
declined to confirm the content of Monday's statement.
