US is increasing forces in the Middle East, deploying the USS Theodore Roosevelt carrier strike group, multiple amphibious vessels and several thousand Marines, sources say. Middle East specialist Wang Jin said the Roosevelt group's arrival could presage a new round of US military action against Iran. Based on current sailing schedules the strike group could reach the region in late October, potentially raising pressure ahead of the US midterm elections. Wang noted that since Feb. 28 any new carrier group's arrival — whether a rotation or reinforcement — has signaled the prospect of fresh strikes on Iran. He added that a strategic stalemate remains: both sides are entrenched on Strait of Hormuz transit and differ sharply over Iran's nuclear and regional security issues, making it unlikely a single large-scale operation would compel concessions. As a result, the stalemate is expected to persist and regional risk is likely to rise.
