Lithuania's parliament on Tuesday approved in a first-round vote a proposal to
repeal the constitutional ban on nuclear weapons, the first of two votes
required for the change to take effect. The 141-seat parliament recorded 106
votes in favour. The amendment, which would abolish a ban imposed more than 30
years ago, must secure a two-thirds majority in both parliamentary votes; the
second round is scheduled for Jan. 12. President Nausėda said parties had agreed
the plan in July and that there is currently no plan to host nuclear weapons,
but removing the clause would allow deployment if the security situation
changes. Lawmakers framed the move as a reassessment of regional security
prompted by Russia's actions.
