France and Germany are pushing the EU to adopt a new trade‑restriction tool;
Beijing said it could coordinate with potentially affected third parties under
WTO rules and study countermeasures. Measures China cited include
anti‑discrimination probes, supply‑chain security investigations and
foreign‑subsidy impact reviews. European Commission trade and economic security
commissioner Maros Sefcovic is due to visit Beijing soon. Yan Shaohua, deputy
director of Fudan University's China‑EU relations centre, said addressing
disputes sector‑by‑sector (eg autos, chemicals) will not resolve the impasse and
urged a comprehensive framework covering trade, investment, services and
technology. He said the framework should reflect China's rising competitiveness,
define mutually acceptable boundaries — including coordinated green‑technology
standards and reciprocal market access — and that the EU should work with China
on a balanced medium‑to‑long‑term roadmap rather than unilaterally setting
deadlines.
