San Francisco's Board of Supervisors on Tuesday unanimously approved a 45-day
moratorium on new data centers, effective immediately and renewable for roughly
two years, while officials weigh longer-term limits. The move, part of growing
U.S. pushback against AI infrastructure, explicitly targets projects including a
proposed Bayview-Hunters Point development; sponsors said the neighborhood has
shouldered heavy air pollution and environmental‑justice burdens. The city is
home to OpenAI and ANTHROPIC. Other U.S. jurisdictions have already restricted
data-center builds over concerns about water use, power costs and environmental
impact.
