The euro held near early-Thursday European-session lows after steep midweek
losses as officials from the European Central Bank (ECB) and Bank of England
(BoE) prepare to speak and the ECB publishes its September meeting minutes later
in the day. U.S. initial jobless claims and August wholesale inventories are
also due. A widening French-German sovereign yield spread and growing market
doubts about the ECB's ability to tighten further weighed on the currency:
EUR/USD fell more than 0.5% toward a 17-month low near 1.1160, EUR/JPY was down
about 0.6%, and EUR/GBP logged a ninth straight session of losses. The Federal
Reserve's September minutes showed a majority of policymakers said another rate
hike may still be needed before year-end and highlighted rising concerns about
upside inflation risks, economic resilience, and strong AI-driven investment
that could add demand-side pressure.
