New Zealand's governing National Party said high debt and budget deficits make
now the wrong time for tax cuts. Finance spokeswoman Nicola Willis said the
immediate priority is reducing debt and investing in frontline services,
especially health and infrastructure. The party's policy paper says tax cuts
will be considered only once finances return to surplus and surpluses are
increasing; the current focus is achieving a fiscal surplus and lowering debt.
