IMF Managing Director GEORGIEVA said on Monday at the IMF–World Bank annual
meetings in Bangkok that AI is already reshaping labor markets and could
undermine tax systems, urging policymakers to rethink education and take
immediate steps to help societies adapt. She said AI is replacing large volumes
of repetitive, procedural work and reducing demand for some workers, while
expanding low-paid roles in sectors such as construction. GEORGIEVA warned the
transition could have deep fiscal consequences: AI may shift income from labor
toward capital and weaken government tax bases that depend heavily on labor
income.
